Thought I'd start a new thread from the old one since the work has now started on the building of the trail system. Here's a link to the old thread that kinda gives some background info on how this all came together.... http://midsouthtrails.com/phpBB3/viewto ... 16&start=0

I wanted to start this thread to give periodic updates, post pictures on the trail building process as well as getting people interested and recruiting volunteers.

This past Sunday (April 26th) Brad C. and I met at the site and dove head first into some of the more difficult areas where there were quite a few washouts near the lake edge to avoid. We probably ended up getting a little under a mile of trail marked? We're looking forward to getting deeper in the woods where the canopy blocks a lot of the under growth and it's easier to navigate. I'm probably gonna go back out on the site and start flagging in a different area that we looked at and I hiked a few months ago on thurs. or fri. evening if any locals are interested in tagging along. I'll also try and snap a few photos of the terrain to hopefully get some folks excited about a new trail system a little closer to Memphis that actually has some decent hills.

Updated May 17th........I'll try and keep an updated map of the trail and show the progress on the flagging and building of the trail. The red line shows the proposed trail by the Army Corp of Engineers, the yellow line show the trail that has been flagged so far......

Here is an updated map of the actual trail done by GPS...

Any plans for an official trail day?

Check the MSTA calendar to avoid any conflicts (races, major rides, etc.) so you can have the best turnout possible.

Great job!

Went out again today and met with a ranger and hiked a portion of the are Mr. Corey and myself hiked out a few weeks ago. Hopefully once we get some more trail marked and squared away like we know we want it we can arrange a work day. the ACOE has handtools as well as chainsaws that they will let us use and they will come with the chainsaw and help clear what we need to move.

Meant to carry my camera to take photos of the terrain but forgot again......also almost stepped on a cottonmouth! About two seconds before the ranger was asking me if I'd seen any snakes yet, which I hadn't til then.

I looked at the AHPS this morning. The lake is up another 6 feet in the past week. That means it is now 6 feet from that dash line on the topo map which is the flood level of 238 ft. With the rain this weekend it will probably rise some more. At least we will know where we have water problems to avoid.

Brad, we re-hiked the area that you and myself flagged that day. It was nice to see exactly where the water was compared to where is was then.

The high water is pushing the snakes up the bank out of their normal territory. Another good reason to stay above the flood level. Did the ranger have any comments about our scouting so far?

Just got back from hiking for an hour around the playground area to see if there was anyway to get into the woods in part of that area and also figuring out where to cross over the road.

Brad, I explained to the ranger a little about the thought process in laying out the trail and he said everything looked good to him. He said he is not afraid to get out break a sweat to help us out when he can.

Probably gonna try and go work Saturday morning and carry the DR mower to clean up the sections we have already marked. If anyone is interested in meeting up to help out let me know. If the ranger we are working with is available he'll probably bring a chainsaw out and clear some of the fallen trees.

Thanks for carrying the load on this area. While I like to help, it is 100 miles r/t for me and it looks like I have 2 bridges to design. One at Herbs and one at Shelby Farms. The NWS has a 50% chance of rain Saturday dropping to 20% for Sunday. Channel 3 has 50% posted for both days. Bar-B-Que fest probably is tempting the Gods of rain.

The proposed route looked a lot different when the water was low. I like that little excursion out that point you found on the east side.

Evan, that is wonderful, I love it. You are doing some great work at Arkabutla. This should get others interested in helping with this effort. Especially our north Mississippi mountain bikers. We are making the most of a great opportunity. Let me know about any supplies or help you need.

Thanks guys! This trailwork is addicting once you start seeing results!

Hopefully this coming weekend we'll get this section completely cleared and can start riding it while working on the other sections.

Thanks for your hard work on making this new trail! From the pictures it really looks good so far. I may be free next weekend to come down and help out. Let me know what tools etc are needed.
