Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy

Postby 7777Mo » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:10 am

I've ridden the trails around Memphis and have got the poison ivy before but never like the one I just got at Stanky Creek. I've tried cortizone ointment, what else is good to get rid of this?

Also as if this was not nasty enough I have too seen many more snakes on the trail than I used to and have asked a few of the park rangers and other bikers about what to do in case of a close ( or closer ) encounter with these critters

I feel like riding but man I need to get rid of this asap

I have to get a course of steroids or even a shot from the doc when I get a bad case of PI.

I usually use Tecnu once I am done biking whether or not I think I came in contact with P.I. I get the rash all to easily so it's just easier for me to use that after every ride. It says that it helps to rid your body of it faster if you already have it but I have never had to use it once I already had it.

This stuff is supposed to be good. $40 bucks for a small tube but if it gets rid of the itching I would pay 10 times that. I haven't tried this yet but again (knock on wood) I haven't gotten P.I. rash since I started washing with Tecnu.

Hope it helps!!

If you're just talking about relief from itching, steroids work. So does Caladryl. I use Caladryl and it numbs the itching down to a dull buzz.

If you're talking about getting rid of the rash, it's too late to do anything but wait it out. The urushiol oil has already permanently bonded to your skin cells. Your body no longer recognizes the "contaminated" area as part of your body and so is destroying it. That's what all that oozing is all about. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urushiol-i ... #Mechanism

Yep, there's nothing to do but wait.

The best way I've found to relieve the itching is to get in the shower, turn the heat up as high as you can stand and hold the rash under the water for a little while.

I've tried Technu and Zanfel and really can't tell that they do anything beyond what hot water will do. They're both pretty abrasive (Zanfel more so) and they'll leave the area nice and red, but that's about it.

Some people will carry isopropyl alcohol in their car and apply it directly to the skin and rub off with paper towels immediately following a ride to prevent it from breaking out.

Thanks for all the tips, the hot water seems to be working so as the caladryl, however it already spreaded to my legs and it feels and looks nasty. It might be a little while until I can get to ride comfortably.

The steroid packs and shots speed up the healing.

Like Kenny said, I carry a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and a towel to wipe down with after every ride. The alcohol will help dry out any oil that is on your skin. It also feels really good on a hot day (except for cuts and scrapes) due to the cooling effect. Be careful with your shoes and other clothing because the oil will remain on them for a while and transfer to your skin later.

Go get the shot and some steroids if it is that bad. It is worth the copay!

Also, use Ivy Block to prevent PI rashes in the first place.

i am highly allergic as well , wrt has lots of very mature poison ivy , oak n sumac. it is hanging in the trail in many places and will look like a normal tree limb . i cut it as often as i see it . it will swipe you when you ride by and its everywhere . the tecnu is great as others have mentioned and read the instructions ! i also get a product from the doctor called fluocinonide and its a topical that really works .
