Trail clearing this weekend Apr 9/10

Postby Brad C » Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:24 pm

It is an all hands on deck trail clearing weekend. The windy conditions over the weekend and the severe storms on Monday made a mess of the trails. We have reports of 16 trees down at Herb Parsons and 22 trees down on just the yellow trail in Shelby Farms. So far there are no reports about the blue or white trails but they probably have numerous fallen trees too. We do not have a report about Stanky Creek yet either. The only bright spot is that Lakeland only had a few small falls that have been cleared.

Two groups will be working on Saturday. One group will work at Herb Parsons and one at Shelby Farms WRT. The Herb Parsons group will meet in the main parking lot at 9:00 and proceed around the trails CCW. If you run late just start riding across the dam and listen for chainsaws.

The Ripper Clan (mostly MSTA) will start at 7:00 Saturday meeting at Walnut Grove. Plans will be made there according to how many people there are. If possible two groups will form and be sent both east and west.

If necessary a group will continue working at Shelby Farms on Sunday morning. The Saturday work force will report how much got completed. Another post will be made in this forum Saturday evening either giving the all clear at Shelby Farms or setting up another work party for Sunday morning.

So, pick your trail, bring your chainsaw, bow saw, or whatever saw you have and join in. Don’t have a saw? Many helpers will be needed to drag away the cut material to clear the trails. Your trails need you!

Is the Ripper Clan starting at 7 or 8?

John sent me this in an email:
"I am planning a 7 AM ride in to knock it out,"
he told me the same thing on the phone.

All,

I've talked to several people who seem to be ready to clear at 8 AM. That seems reasonable to me. How about 8 AM under the WG bridge? If you get there before that, just head on in.

We'll try to clear WG to Germantown first and if we have the energy, we'll head West towards Summer Ave.

I was thinking that if we have enough people, maybe we could launch one team from G-town and one from WG, both teams working the yellow along the river. When we meet, we could head down the levee and each party could work the blue back to their point of origin.

Does anyone live out by G-town who could lead a team in from there?

Thanks,

John H

Suggestion: We could all meet at Walnut Grove, as planned, and if there are enough saws and people, split into two crews. One could simply then drive to Gtwn and start there. Might limit confusion...

That's why Rich has all those letters and abbreviations after his name.

That would make it easier to get a complete volunteer count so I can send accurate information to the park.

I think that's a waste of time! If someone is spearheading a group from G-town, it would be more convenient for people in that area. I will have a spear lined up. Dan, you hear me?

We should have enough people. I notified Outdoors, Inc, Breakaway, Fleet Feet, the Peddler and the MRTC. Surely one or two runners will show!! I'm testing this new social media I keep hearing about!

Sorry Rich, you did have a good idea that one other time!

The St. Peter Villa 5k Run is at 9:00 Saturday morning. It will be interesting to see if any runners skip that for trail work.
