Thanks for the GREAT show up to clear the trails 4-9-11

Postby Brad C » Sat Apr 09, 2011 5:05 pm

I want to thank everyone who participated in the organized trail clean up day today (Sat 4-9-11) or anyone who did individual work at another time. I don't have all the paperwork but it is reported there were 12 people at WRT and we had 8 at Herbs. Thanks to everyone.

Anyone who has done individual effort in Shelby Farms, please PM your work hours to me. I will add them to our 2011 MTB volunteer annual report to the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy. It is important that we report all our volunteer time. It helps the MTB community by showing we care about the trails and are willing to work for what we get. The volunteer time also helps Shelby Farms show they have a strong volunteer base which gives them higher ranking when applying for grant money to improve the park.

We have one tree to deal with on Sunday. It is a BIG TREE, about 3 feet in diameter. The crew working that section has made a reroute that needs the tree to be opened up to get the trail through for all users. At some later time some sort of fun stuff will be done with the remaining section.

We are meeting at Germantown trail head at 9:00 Sunday (tomorrow) morning to attack that tree. Steve K. will be trying out his new big chainsaw. Outcast, here is your chance to show off your big chainsaw.

Now we wait and see what the weather does Sunday night and Monday morning. We could be doing a repeat performance next Saturday.

The Sunday crew went to the BIG TREE with visions of cutting a section out of it and clearing the trail. Then reality set in. WOW, that's a big tree. We did watch in awe as several groups of young runners leaped over the tree with gazelle like ability. Probably high school cross country runners.

Then we thought extend the reroute around the root ball. However, the reroute went through the lowest place in that area. That would get quite muddy in wet weather. There were more holes in back of the root ball.

After doing some recon, we decided on a reroute to the north side of the tree on high ground. We did a rough in on that route. Steve is going to return with the DR to mow the path. In a few weeks the trail will look like it was always there. Who knows what the "beavers" will do with that fallen tree.

We then learned there was a tree down on levee 1 near the white trail turn in. So we cleared that too. Pictures of the Sunday activity were added to this gallery.

Thanks to those who showed up on Sunday to help on this project.

Now we wait and see if the weather will cause us to do a repeat performance next weekend.

Great work and Many Thanks to all who helped restore our playground. When I slipped  in the mudhole I really twisted my ankle, rode around the neighborhood today and it was very tender..

Brad,
Log me in for two more hours this afternoon, 4PM to 6PM.

I got the DR out and cut all of the yellow from G'town trailhead to the "big down tree".

The bypass is clean and needs riders.

Beavers already made two significant cuts in the tree, let's see what happens next.

Yeah! =D> Rode through there right after you guys left but not before trying to get ArielD over the fallen tree. When I got home I pulled out probably 36 in. of thin vines from my rear sprockets.
