Herb’s Cedar Point Loop’s Big Brother

Postby SteveK » Wed Jan 04, 2012 10:38 am

This past Monday I finished roughing in the next loop at Herb (significantly longer than the recently completed Cedar Point loop).

Therefore this Saturday I will be spending most of the day grading the new trail tread. If you want to help groom the trail look for the yellow caution tape at the entrance and exit points and listen for the sound of my DR Bush Hog.

(For reference later today I will post a picture of the area where the loop begins and ends, it’s where I have a log cut in half crossing a muddy area. The loop bypasses the mud and adds significant distance and elevation). =D>

Same Loop we look over last year? Look forward to it. See you Saturday at some point.

Matt,
You gave me the hint for the area now known as Cedar Point loop, the loop I’ll work this weekend is longer and is about a mile from the Cedar Point loop (riding CW).

Steve,

Is the beginning right before that log with the ribbon stuffed inside? I saw a spot today shortly before I came across the split log (CCW) that looked like a new section of trail but it had a couple of small logs across it. I'm working this Saturday but hoping to make it out there on Sunday to give it a whirl.

Yes Larry that's the area.

The picture below (at least two years old) is from the day we installed the log bridge. If riding CCW the loop ends and rejoins the trail where the guy in blue shirt (Chris) is standing.

You enter the new loop behind me (I'm taking a picture of Jeremy crossing).

I'm going to estimate that the new loop will add .2 to .3 mile to the trail.

Below gives a good view of the area behind the guys, riders going CCW will join from that area.

Steve, what time will you be heading in Sat? I can walk in with you. Also where will you park?

AlanB,
I have been looking at the weather forecast and we might get some rain Saturday. However the forecast for tomorrow, Friday, looks more like spring. So I’m checking my work schedule to see if I can take Friday off and go out to Herb and try some new equipment on the new loop trail.

I’ll let you know more about Saturday later and the success of the new equipment. But you can figure if the weather holds good for Saturday that I would start around 8 AM and park at the same place as last weekend.

FYI. The new equipment I refer to is a carbide tipped “scarifier blade” that I have attached to the bottom of my snow blade. I hope it will help with removing the top material from the trail. I’ll take pictures and let you know if I get out there Friday.

Thanks Ken, I think I will be OK by myself on Friday. I'm not sure I can tell you what time I'll be out there Friday.

I had a very successful Friday, I got about half of the loop finished.

DrRob showed up and measured the loop at about .4 mile, not bad.

I'll be out again Saturday, starting around 8 AM at Lakeview trail head. It takes me about 45 min. to walk the DR to the job site.

If you want to help great, show up anytime, the trail can use some handwork.

Glad I got to see ya out there today, Steve. Even better that you were all done!!

Nice work on the new cut. Enjoyed being among the first to hit it. It really flows nice and I like the descent at the end (CCW).

Get out and break it in everyone! More trail thanks to Steve. Thanks!

The new loop is great. I rolled up just as Steve was finishing up with the last 5ft of trail, I got the first set of tracks on the newly groomed section =D>. Flows great in each direction. Just need for everyone to get out there and run it in.

Thank you Steve, Alan & DrRob!

Great job by DrRob and Allen. They provided the tough hand tool work on the trail tread.

Kudos to Steve; The dude laid out an excellent track with input from some other bikers. I am only a humble laborer. Ride the loop in from either direction and and lets get it worked in. Flows great. Adds elevation and I like the downhill part. Rock on =D>
