Herb's final loop construction!

Postby SteveK » Sun Jan 22, 2012 5:23 pm

Today I hiked into the section out at Herb Parsons where I will begin this winter's final loop construction.

This will make the 3rd loop installed this winter season and after completion will give the Herb trail system a minimum 10 mile loop.

I took a couple of pictures to give you an idea where the loop will begin and end.

Traveling CCW this red 1 mile marker should be familiar, that is where the loop will "slope" to the left toward the lake shore. My trail tool points in the direction of the new loop, the horizontal tree in the background is where the loop will rejoin the existing trail:

Traveling CW this is the view of the loop intersection, the return to the old trail is just 15 yards behind this picture:

Here's a very interesting tree I found in the middle of the new loop, it is the largest Cedar I have found out at Herb. Therefore I have named it "The Mother Cedar", and the loop will pass right next to it. Pay respect to "The Mother Cedar"!

Another picture of "The Mother Cedar" gives perspective with the lake in the background:

This will be one of the longest and most interesting loops I have installed at Herb. Stay tuned for work days. Also need some advise on some drops and bench cuts that will be part of the loop. You riders who enjoy drops are going to be happy.

More later!

Thanks for the links Brad.

My plan is to use the property on both sides of the Old Monterey Road cut as it exits the lake.

The loop will traverse the road cut twice and will make for some interesting and to some “fun” drops.

These drops will not come close to the excitement of Stanky’s Blue drop or Herb’s “Old Drop”, but none the less will add to the personality of the trail.

Let me try to describe what I think this section will look like:

Imagine a half pipe with a trail running along the top of both rims.

At various points along the rim will be drop off paths. Some easy and gentle for guys like me, some more aggressive for guys like you and some that are almost vertical, for Busta Move.

My work plan for this project is to work both Saturday and Sunday of every weekend that has suitable weather (until the loop is fit to ride).

I work prepared to do it alone and if someone shows up to help it is a bonus.

So if anyone is out and about over the next weeks and want to help just look for the Red 1 mile marker and listen for the sound of the DR Bush Hog or chain saw. Also if you see my Black F350 on the dam you will know I’m working trail.

When it comes time to work the Old Monterey Road cut drop offs I’ll post up for help. But that portion of the trail scheme will be one of the last endeavors.

MAXLESS,
By the time the Dogwoods are blooming the “Herb MSTA Epic Loop” will be over 10 miles long and just about perfect.

See you in the Spring.

I will not speak for Steve, but this puts a little doubt in the situation. Looks to get mushy.

Friday: Showers, mainly after noon. High near 63. East southeast wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 55. South southeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers and thunderstorms. High near 70. South southwest wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. North northwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

I have a home front project that needs my attention this weekend.
Weather permitting I might get out there Sunday before the Super Bowl, but as Brad points out it looks bad for dry conditions.
