Problem at Herb

Postby SteveK » Thu Apr 12, 2012 5:46 am

Here's a report I got from Larry K:
There's one spot out there that's "bitten" at least two folks hard recently. Tony Longo taco'd a Stans Flow today and muddymatt said he saw a guy break a headtube a month or so ago and it sounded like a bad crash.

The spot is the small/deep dip in the last 1.5 mile or so of the trail (ccw) where the 2011 race course went straight through the dip but the 2010 course made a hard left right before it. It looks like that small ditch has gotten quite a bit deeper in the last year but isn't getting wider. In a way it's like that ditch is becoming a wheel swallower. Hopefully you know the exact spot I'm talking about, there's another dip 10' after it but that one's not a problem.

I have some wood and tools that will fix that problem.

I plan to work this Saturday morning, I'll post soon as to the start time and location.

I will need help moving wood to the site, it's not far from Lakeville drive so this will not be a "death march".

Because there is no flow of water in the ditch this "bridge" will not have to be too complex.

Let me know if you can help.

I helped get the ball rolling on it, so I'll be there for sure.

Didn't the person living closest to the Lakeview entrance (near end of the two loops that merge after the dip) say you could park in their driveway?

That is the place we were going to move the old Beaver Creek bridge until we found out how heavy it is.

I would be out to help but I have a previously arranged project to take care of, MSMBP.

Larry,
I don't know that guy so I really don't know what driveway to park.

I am planning on dropping the wood and tools by the trail entrance near that short trail from Lakeview Drive.

It is the house on the north side of Catfish Lake. I recall it being gray. He has 2 driveways. One by the house and a second one to the north. Several years ago after Hurricane Elvis he invited Eddie and I to park in his north driveway when he saw us with trail tools. It would still be quite a hike from there to the ditch. Access from Lakeview directly in would be a lot quicker. I think the main parking lot is closer than the Catfish Lake dam entrance.

Soon as you do that I'll start arranging my day so I can be there.

OK gang here's the plan. I'll use Friday to get all tools and material together.

Let's meet at the main parking area Saturday 9:30AM.

From there we will determine where I can drop the "stuff" off, that will be somewhere along Lakeview Drive.

Steve I should be able to help also. If we have several people we should cut down that big dead tree leaning over on those small sapplings. I'll bring my chainsaw with me and maybe a pole saw too.

Not sure if it's the one drrob is talking about, but I remember one hanging over the trail a few hundred feet from where we'll be working. Us tall folks have to duck under it.

I'll be there. Anything I can bring? I've got a cordless 4" circular if that will help? Just let me know.

Big dead tree is on the loop going ccw right before the new big cedar loop. It is the one that was leaning and then blew over and is hanging up on some small sapplings that look like there going to bust any time now. We have rerouted around it twice now. Its history tomorrow.
