Stanky Work Day, April 28 at 8am

Postby gasiorv » Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:25 pm

Weather permitting, plan on a trail work day at Stanky Creek on Saturday, April 28 at 8am.

I want to focus on the blue trail. Trail needs trimmed back the green is closing in, there are also a bunch of face slappers. In addition, shortly after the drop there are two bridges, a climb, a rotted out log pile and then you drop back down over a rooty section along the creek where you make a hard right to the short steep climb. Right there next to the creek, the trail is falling and a hole has approaching the trail, in addition, there is a hole starting to the right. Therefore, I propose rerouting the trail further away from the creek in this area. The next bridge needs reset.

Also, need to cut the tree that fell in the pit area and work on some draining and fixing some damage on the white trail.

Yellow trail - the boardwalk needs fixing and in the section opposite the boardwalk I would like to add addtional bridge there (the bridge that is no longer used at the end of the yellow, carry it back to this section).

For the pit area, I will cut it the week before the race so that it will not have a chance to grow back before the race.

I will bring a bunch of hand tools, weedeater, and a mower, and if I can get my saw to run a chainsaw (lesson learned, don't leave fuel in the tank without stabilizer). Bring whatever you got.

My chainsaw is running. I got 2 cycle oil with built in stabilizer.

With advance planning here is a good opportunity to reach out to other trail user groups to participate.

I'm taking on the challenge of recruiting the runners for trail maintenance. I realized I cannot complain, unless I actually reach out to the running community myself. Also, because I haven't had the response I was hoping for from just posting on these boards.

Joe, do you want to take it from here? (I'm good at delegating.)

I can bring the MSTA trail tools if needed. We have several McLeods, pulsakis, and fire rakes.

Nuts, I have committed to do to "Tour de Cure" that very day and time.

If you want me to follow up on Sunday with some DR bush hog work I'm in.

Joe sent me an email that he will be reaching out to other trail users.

Please bring tools, don't know how many people that will show, but you can never want to have more people than tools!!

Thanks for the update. I will bring everything we have. Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

BTW, I have a few free fire extinguishers left if anyone needs one.
Dan, I have one with the gauge going down a little. There is the "toy" you asked for.

I will be posting the trail work day on the MRTC Facebook page. I want the members to be aware so they can help. Any runners reading this thread, please share with all your runner friends. This is a great time to give back to Stanky, especially if you ran in the Winter XC series.

I posted to the MRTC Facebook page, but with the new formatting, I'm not sure how many people will actually see my post.

Are there any MRTC members on here that could contact the person in charge of their Facebook page and ask them to post the relevant information to the main Facebook page?

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,

I met up with Lisa O. from MRTC at the Shelby Farms Earth Day event. I told her her about the problem with your post on their page. Lisa asked me to email the information to her and she will get it on their site.

I just emailed your first forum post about the work day to Lisa.

Joe,

Terri Clarke runs the Facebook page for MRTC I believe. She aso does the broadcast emails. My guess is an email blast from her will reach more folks. I'll post the info on our Journeymen page as well.

I don't have trail trimming tools, but I do have fully functional arms and legs and I've missed too many trail work days. I'll be there.

Current forecast is showing good for Saturday.

Meet in the pit area at 8am. I will be riding Trail on Wed to identify needs, but I know there are a lot of face slappers. Will need people to bring loppers to ride course and trim off anything that is at or close to rider level.

Will need a team to work on draining the creek, this is mainly rake/hoe/shovel work, you go down stream and move all the gravel and dirt that is damning up the creek and causing it to dam up at the crossing, once the water starts to flow it will take several hours to days to drain the area so we can actually work on the crossing in the future. This is hard work but definetly worth the effort.

Reroute on the blue - will need a few people with machetes and I will bring push mower to cut a reroute on the blue where a hole is starting at the creek edge. Other possibility is to make the hole larger and build a bridge but I don't have time to coordinate getting the wood, etc......

Need a few people to ride around with shovel, mattock, etc.. and re-place and secure all bridges.

Need people to fix the boardwalk and to possibly build another bridge adjacent/opposite to the current boardwalk.

A lot of work, but if we get enough people to show up, we should have stanky in sweet shape in no time.
As a side note, while we are working a few locals including SCC's Chris Davis and the Godfather of Stanky Creek, Chris Irving, will be racing at Cohutta, good luck to all the Memphis racers!!
