Trail Days coming soon - My meeting with Robet Mayer @ SFP

Postby Brad C » Fri May 04, 2012 2:48 pm

On Friday 5/4/12, I had a meeting with Shelby Farms Operations Manager Robert Mayer. This meeting was not in his office, not in his vehicle, not over lunch, but in the woods, on the trails, on mountain bikes.

During the Earth Day event Robert asked me to let him know the conditions of the trail, particularly any hazardous locations along the river. I did a ride one day and took a number of pictures which I delivered to the park on Friday 4/27. I stopped by the park on 5/1 and Robert was so interested in the situation that he wanted to see it for himself.

We set up for Friday 5/4 and met at levee 2. From there we spent about 2 hours on the trails looking at the various hazard locations. Robert took a lot of notes. Trail days will be set up in the near future to deal with the most serious locations before it is 108 in the shade.

Nice, =D>
Where exactly did you guys tour?
Did he have anything to say like: “Where did all this sand come from?” or “Where did all this privet come from?” or “Where did all these trees come from?”

Robert did know where the sand, privet, and trees came from. He did ask about the big piece of wire rope sticking out of the trail came from. I explained that the forest was a resource and was logged by the penal farm. Robert also did not realize that the ACOE dug an entirely new river channel back in the 1960's. He thought they just enhanced the existing river for better drainage. I told Robert the next time we ride I would show him some old river.

Robert also did acknowledge that no other groups are knocking on his door wanting to help maintain the trails. It's just us MTB'ers.

Well then, let's go rent a Dingo and do some work. Or better yet have Robert buy one and let us use it! :P
