Not working Tuesday 5/15? Help repair hazards on the WRT

Postby Brad C » Sun May 13, 2012 8:52 am

Following up on the hazard tour I took on MTB with Robert Mayer on May 4.

Robert and a group of Shelby Farms Rangers are going to be working on the places that are falling into the Wolf River. We will be meeting at levee 2 (the gravel paved one by the Raptor Center) at 7:30 and going in from there. The plan is to get as much done as possible in about 4 hours. The rangers will have the park's chainsaw and other tools. I will bring my saw and some MSTA tools.

The park sees these locations as a serious liability situation and wants to relocate the trail away from the bank edge. People have fallen off the edge. Fortunately there have not been serious injuries reported.

 Yup, more like slid off with a soft sandy roll to the river bank. Several weeks ago. No injury. Worst part was getting the bike back up to the trail. Luckily a trail runner stopped to assist.

Pesky day job interferes with me joining you. :(

Suggest to Robert to try and schedule weekends for max volunteers.

You can put in FB if you want.

Robert called me to ask if I could be available for trail knowledge and such more than labor. I just thought to post this on the off chance someone might be available. I think he has a lot of staff scheduled. We will get as much done as possible in the time available.

I can't make the morning work. I am available to do any follow up/clean up work later that afternoon.

I worked with Robert, Brian, Drew and a bunch of the other Shelby Farms Rangers on several trail hazards on the yellow trail. We opened up the trail away from the edge by the small steel bridge east of levee 2. West of levee 2 we rerouted several places where the trail is on the bank edge including the long one just short of levee 1. Another day will be scheduled to work on the hazards near and to the west of levee 1.

Other work needed. Due to the almost total lack of a winter this year, the undergrowth is growing like crazy already. A lot of the trail is getting grown in and mowing will need to start early this year.

I did snap a couple pictures.

I rode that area last night and agree overgrowth is everywhere.

Do you want to get a “blanket” approval for DR bush hog work?

We could set up a day or two for cutting followed by burgers and beer.

I will work on that. What's your schedule look like the next few weekends?

Brad:
Thanks again for you guidance & support yesterday. As for MSTA providing project support to the trails- come on ahead! Your sweat equity to clear trail corridors and improve sightlines is greatly appreciated.

Robt. Mayer

When shall we start? The grill is clean and I have 2 full gas canisters.

All the weather web sites are predicting between 86 - 88 this weekend. If Accuweather's long range is correct it may be 95 degrees all through Memorial day weekend.

I'm up early Saturday so I can get started with the DR bush hog before it gets too hot.

Where do you want me to start cutting? Trim Levee 3 and work the yellow west?

Change of plans.

I rode the WRT tonight and much to my surprise I found levee 2 fully cut and levee 3 was cut up to the blue trail crossing. Way to go Rangers!

So.......Brad I suggest Saturday morning starting at the Walnut Grove trail head and work east. That would give us most exposure to the over grown trail head area and yellow trail section.

Does that sound doable?
