Trail work starting at levee #2 (Raptor Center)

Postby SteveK » Thu Jun 07, 2012 6:09 am

Rich K's effort to clean up the Wolf River trail system continues this Saturday June 9th starting at levee #2 (Raptor Center) 8AM. Working west from levee #2 towards levee #1.

I got the all equipment; bush hog, chain saw, pole saw etc.

We could use some help dragging privet. (bring gloves and water)

I sent an email to Shelby Farms notifying the primary staff members about the MSTA trail clean up on Saturday.

Thanks Brad, it would be great if they could unlock the cable to allow us closer (truck) access to the yellow.

(No big deal though)

Big thanks to Steve K for agreeing to mow privet on yet one more Saturday morning at WRTs, and Brad for handling logistics.

The Yellow from Gtwn to Levee 1 is not very sandy and provides an alternative to the Blue on loop rides. But, the Yellow between Levee 2 and 1 is pretty overgrown w/ privet. We will clear this section to improve sight lines on the flowy turns to make it even more fun to ride. The weather on Sat. morning looks good--not too hot.

We'll work for 3 or 4 hours--come learn the art of trail maintenance a la MSTA!

The sight lines on the corners on the Yellow between Levees 2 and 1 are improved, thanks to Steve K and his armada of trail ripping gear, Mike and myself. The problem is that the sand trail tread can't handle the speed the new sight lines afford--I hit a tree riding this section in the afternoon. Ripping can be hazardous. Be careful, boys and girls.

Rich, I too went out to enjoy the "fruits of our labor" late afternoon. That trail is starting to be fun again. (I hope you didn't get hurt, or hurt the tree!)

Thanks to you and "Big Mike" for working so hard pulling cut privet. =D>

Next on the list is to "open up" that high water bypass wood bridge section again.
(That will have to wait, I'm out of town next weekend. When I get back I want to do some clearing out at Herb before anything else.)

No worries, Steve; the tree is fine! Lost a little bark to my shoulder, though. I'll check on it later today to be sure it's ok.
