Saturday >> Work Day >> Grey's Creek Trail

Postby rich_k » Tue Nov 13, 2012 9:08 pm

Steve K and I plan to maneuver his DR onto the trail to Grey’s Creek on SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT 1 pm, Nov. 17, to do much needed clearing.

Time: 1 pm

Place to meet: To be determined. Either the old GTWN Rd. trailhead (closest to GTWN Rd. and the river), or the east side of the Lowe’s parking lot.

Why: This trail is great for winter riding because it drains well but is overgrown in places with privet and briars.

What to bring: trimmers, hand saws, clippers, etc. No chainsaws needed.

Ride or walk: Steve and I will walk; others could ride in. The first ½ mile has already been cleared, so we’ll start clearing after this section.

Be very cautious when crossing the concrete culvert, very very slippery........

Thanks Mark, I scouted the culvert out last night and it is dry and should stay dry for about the next week.

I usually park in the west end of Lowe's parking lot and go into the woods right behind the large Lowe's sign, directly across from Budget rental's back door. There is a trail through there right down to the trail head that bypasses the slippery ditch altogether. I hope to see you there, regardless of the means of ingress.

Last night was the first time I have been on that trail in 10 years. I am very impressed with the trail work that has been done to date. =D>

Hopefully Saturday we can improve it more. After last night’s visit to the trail I plan to use this section of the WRT regularly.

The section from Grey's creek to Houston Levee along the bluff was barely passable last spring- It sure would be nice to get that rideable again!

Big thanks to Mike, Larry, Byron, Brad and Steve K for clearing the Grey's Trail to the big drop. For those of you skittish about riding the culvert at the beginning, Steve drove the DR down/up that thing without batting an eye. No reason to not bomb it on a bike! The trail still needs some work but the majority of face-slappers and briars are gone to the half-way point.

Get out and ride!
