Yellow trail work Sat. Nov. 9, at 9:00

Postby Brad C » Sun Nov 03, 2013 9:32 pm

The yellow trail has a section that is falling into the river and is a hazard to trail users. MSTA will be rerouting that section away from the riverbank to prevent people from falling off of the edge into the river.

We are meeting in the area south of the Farm Road traffic light at 9:00 on Saturday November 9, at 9:00. That is the quickest way to the work site.

This will be mainly chainsaw, hedge trimmer, and hand tool work. There will be a lot of drag and pitch of the cut material.

Shelby Farms Park has approved this trail work and sent their thanks to MSTA.

The usual post trail work refreshments will be provided.

I like that section of trail and haven't fallen into the river--yet. But I'll try to make it to keep an eye on you guys. I may get an am ride in and be a bit late.

We will leave the crumbling route open so you can ride it until you do fall into the river.

Is this work on the section between 5 points and the first levee or north of Walnut Grove at the "Frank Drop"? Either way I plan on coming out. Both are in need of work.

As the Facebook post says, this work is on the section between 5-points and levee 1. That section of the trail gets more use, so it has more opportunity for someone to get injured at this hazard location.

The "Frank Drop" north of WG also needs work. MSTA has documented that location to the park and has approval to reroute the trail to the inland side of that big tree. We will schedule that in the near future.

Off road cycling has made great strides working with Shelby Farms Park. Under current trail use policy in the natural area management plan the park is suppose to keep cycling out. I know that TDEC has put pressure on the park on this issue, however the conservancy has resisted. Our 300 to 400 documented volunteer hours every year and photo documenting our work has put MTB in front of the other trail user groups on assisting Shelby Farms Park with trail maintenance.

Working in the state natural area involves an approval process. These safety reroutes get approved directly by park management. Some other larger projects have to be approved by TDEC when inside the LBNA.

I'd volunteer every time for wrt trail days, but i can only do sunday mornings, except for december through march when i get some saturday mornings off work. This is why i haven't been showing up to help out since earlier this year.

Brad, same goes for your request about shelby forest. If it ever happens, plan it on a sunday morning or a saturday morning between december and march, and i'm in.

Brad,

What do you need me to bring? Chainsaw? Ninja weed wacker (repaired)? Pick axe?

I'll try to join you all by 10 am.

I'm bringing two trail tools for making a new trail tread. Also a hand saw and small chain saw, all carried on my BOB trailer. I love cutting privet, I hate the stuff!

That should do, Steve.

I'll pack my saw and the hedge trimmer. Try to get another McLeod on the trailer too.

Rich, the ninja should be handy for clearing the ground cover. Whatever else you want to bring is up to you. I think Steve will be packing a McLeod and a Pulaski.

Remember, there is a run Sat. morning too. No telling how many will park across the street. We should be able to find room somewhere. Paved trail to the yellow will still be the quickest way in and out. Less travel time = more frosty beverage time.

Brad,
Based on the fact that parking may be an issue due to the runners overflow parking why don’t we consider parking off of Humphreys near one of the parking lots close to Baptist Hospital?
Actually that would be a closer route to the trail work site.

There is a medical office bldg. right across the street from the bridge access. Lot should be empty on Sat. am. We can give it a try. Going through the Wolf River Greenway and across the bridge should get us some looks
