Another trail day coming soon

Postby Brad C » Fri Nov 08, 2013 12:27 pm

The Frank Drop has dropped several others too.

The location in the picture below is the subject of considerable discussion in the Facebook group. Everyone agrees a reroute is needed here soon. This is between the sand bypass and the 3-plank bridge.

Be watching for a trail day in the near future.

MSTA has approval from Shelby Farms to go ahead with this one too.

I cannot help on Sunday.

There's also a 14" fallen tree across the trail within 10 feet of that spot right now. It could be easily removed w/ a chainsaw.

That brings up an issue. Shelby Farms trails have the largest and most diverse user groups in terms of use types and abilities. We think that is the place where someone already fell off of and had to be rescued by park rangers and MFD rescue squad.

That incident brought on an immediate reaction to widen the trail for improved access for rescue ATVs, UTVs, and MFD mini-ambulance. Luckily that fervor died down. However, more accidents would mean more rescues and more calls to widen the trail. So if it is desirable to keep the trail a single track instead of being widened to look like the Greenline we need to do this reroute.

We can leave that hazard area open for people who want to "hit IT" but please do not call Shelby Farms or 911 to get rescued. That will stir up the widen the trail argument again.

We decided to hold up on this reroute for a week or two. However a work day will be scheduled in the near future to take care of this. During our post trail work discussion one of our workers did see a rider fall off this spot.

Be watching for an announcement.
