IMBA Trailbuilding Class in Memphis

Postby andrea » Wed Mar 12, 2014 10:02 am

Because I try not to complain too much without offering a solution, I need to add this post to back up the thread I posted here yesterday: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5990

Brad has mentioned a couple of times about Memphis getting denied an IMBA Trail Care Crew visit, and, in light of that, I contacted Steve Schneider, the IMBA regional rep from Arkansas. While he can't change the IMBA Mothership's decision to not send the TCC to Memphis, he did volunteer to come to Memphis and give the same presentation as the trail care crew would give. It would be free to all, and is about a 3-4 hour talk/Q&A time with someone who is very knowledgeable- basically a "Trailbuilding 101" class that will help everyone who attends learn the ins and outs of building and maintaining sustainable trials that are safe, fun, and suitable for all trail users. I talked to him this morning, and he is eager to help. If you're all interested, I'll get a couple of possible dates from him, and we can set up a time/place for his presentation.

Depending on when it's scheduled for and my availability, I'd be interested in hearing the seminar. Especially after hearing how well the Syllamo one went.

If it's on a weekend when I'm in town, I'd be interested in attending. But I usually do trail work w/ Brad, and he knows everything already!

Be sure to get the dates to me when Steve comes up with them. I may be able to get space at the Shelby Farms VC or Agricenter. The pull for that is that SF would want to get some people in the class. When we have a set date I am sure we can generate additional interest.

Other locations:
The Newk's in Cordova has a room available for no charge. They open at 11:00. It is a bare room so projector and screen (which I have) has to be brought in. Newk's does have a small selection of "frosty beverages."

Jason's Deli at Poplar & Highland has a room equipped with a projector, screen, marker board, and soda service. That room is $100 for 4 hours. Jason's opens at 9:00. Sorry, no "frosty beverages." MSTA will cover the charge if this location is used. It is a larger room than Newk's.

Most libraries have meeting rooms available at no charge for non-profit organizations if the event is open to the public at no charge. The libraries open at 10:00.

This is an interesting situation. Tennessee being in the area involved in the IMBA/SORBA merger means our regional rep. officially is Tom Sauret over in GA. Of course we never hear from him because we are not a Sorba Chapter, i.e. redheaded step child.

I am interested as well.

I've been through the trail building class before out in CO, but I would definitely like to know the differences in building sustainable trail with the very different terrain here.
