indoor training?

Anybody out there use a magnetic or fluid trainer during the winter?
Too cold to ride outside, it is just not any fun splashing around in the mud.
Considered buying another indoor stationary bike (we already have an old lifecycle - still works, but the upright riding position is not comfortable to me), but it looks like for much less than the cost of a good indoor stationary bike, I could get a decent trainer and a road bike to put on it.
Bad plan?
Advice on models or brands from the training gurus?

Cycleops or Kurt Kinetic for trainers. Go with the fluid to make the best of a less than fun endeavor... ;-)

I know the stationary bikes can be pricey. You say you'll need a road bike too? Looking at used? Fit is more crucial on a road bike than mountain. If you're looking at new, entry level bikes will start at around $800.
