Substitute project for Sat. May 18 - Chainsaws!

Postby Brad C » Wed May 15, 2013 3:32 pm

We have reports of several trees down on the trails south of Walnut Grove. One large one on levee 2 (Raptor Center) and some smaller ones on the yellow trail between that levee and 5 points.

I suggest meeting at the Raptor Center at 9:00 which is close to the biggest tree and work from there.

I would join y'all, but I'll be out of town Sat morning - got a small race down in Batesville I'm signed up for. Raptor Center is certainly a great spot to meet.

See my post in the other thread. To recap as of 6:30PM 05/15/13:
  • The large tree on levee 2 is still there, between blue and yellow.
  • There is one new tree down that was not down Tuesday on yellow between levees 2 and 3.
  • There is one other tree still down on the yellow, also between levees 2 and 3.

I ran in along levee 2 from the RC and went east on the yellow last night, so I can't comment on anything west of levee 2 beyond what I saw Tuesday, but it sounds like Matt and Poopy et al took care of a couple trees already.

I am informed that the smaller trees are removed but a few larger ones remain to be cut. That includes some new ones that fell in the last few days. So we will be working Saturday morning starting from the Raptor Center at 9:00.

Shelby Farms is informed that we are working on the trails and sent their thanks.

Message from Ops. Mgr. Larry Pickens below.

I may park at the germantown trailhead and ride in from there. One of the trees is really close to that end of the yellow and has alot of smaller branches. I plan to take my hand saw and clear off some of the branches in the way so it's ready for a quick cut with a chainsaw.

If you'd rather me meet up with everyone else at the raptor center i'm good with that. Can we park there?

This is the tree i'm talking about (pic from Mark Travis):

If that is what you want to do that is fine with me. I just need to get your name on the list to keep up with our time for the annual volunteer time report the park requests.

There is parking at the Raptor Center. It is usually deserted. We keep the area in front of the gate clear in case someone comes to do maintenance or something. There may be "frosty beverages" there too.

Matt im thinking i'll just meet at the raptor center and depending on personnel we can decide there. Figure that large tree on the levee could use quite a few people to get cleared.

Ill be there at 9 at raptor center.

Thanks to Craig, Rich, and Matt for the help on this tree clearing. The multiple branch tree on levee 2 is cleared along with the trees down on the yellow trail. In addition we cleared a broken leaning tree on the yellow trail and another leaning tree on the white trail. A few snags encroaching into the trails were cleaned up too.

I rode the WRTs this afternoon and really enjoyed that there were no trees down! Thanks to Poppie, Tony and others, and today's crew, for clearing downed trees.

The Yellow from Greenline to GTWN is primo (esp. if you take the bypasses)! The Blue up north is OK, but forget it from 3-plank to WG. Blue from WG to 5 points, and to the White, is OK. After Levee 3, take the Yellow for a while longer--too wet on the Blue.

Get out and ride!
